What to Do in Zagreb When It Rains: 7 Indoor Ideas
A rainy day in Zagreb raises the same question every time: where to go today, somewhere indoor, that isn’t just another coffee. Here are seven places you can walk into the same day, with no booking a week ahead. Each one says how long it takes and when it is open, because Monday catches people out: most Zagreb museums are closed that day.
1. Technical Museum Nikola Tesla
The largest indoor attraction in the city and the only place on this list where half a day disappears easily. A planetarium, a walk-through replica of a mine, and live demonstrations of Tesla’s experiments. Works with kids and without them.
How long: 2 to 3 hours. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 9:00 to 17:00, Saturday 9:00 to 13:00, closed on Mondays and public holidays. The planetarium and the mine run on guided sessions only, so check the timetable before you go.
2. A film in the middle of the day
An underrated answer to a wet afternoon. CineStar in Branimir Centar is the one closest to the centre and to the main train station, and screenings start in the morning, so you don’t have to wait for the evening.
How long: about 2 hours.
3. Museum of Hangovers
This is our museum, so let’s say straight away why it belongs on the list: it is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, including Mondays and public holidays (closed only on 1 January, 25 December and Easter Sunday). That is exactly the day most of the other museums here are closed.
Inside there are eight themed rooms, more than ten interactions, a driving simulator with slowed reaction time and blurred vision, a tilted floor, and over 50 real stories from people around the world. It is not quiet browsing, it is the kind of place where people laugh out loud, which is why it is also on our list of unusual things to do in Zagreb. For everything you can try inside, see our guide to hands-on indoor activities in Zagreb.
Where: Vlaška 55, a five minute walk from the main square. How long: about an hour. Price: from 10 EUR online (price on 10 Sept 2026: €10). Booking: not needed, you walk in whenever you arrive. Works for two people and for a whole group.
4. The Grič Tunnel
Three hundred and fifty metres of tunnel underneath the Upper Town, free and always dry. It is not a half day activity, but it is practical: you cross a good part of the centre without getting wet, and it is one of the few Zagreb attractions that costs nothing.
How long: 15 to 20 minutes.
5. The covered part of Dolac market, then coffee
The roofed section of Dolac works in the rain, and the dairy row sits underneath it. Market followed by coffee in the centre is probably the most Zagreb way there is to wait out a shower.
How long: an hour, as long as the coffee lasts.
6. Museum of Contemporary Art
A large building in Novi Zagreb, roomy enough to lose two hours in. If the Technical Museum is out because it is Monday, this is the other option for a proper museum afternoon.
How long: about 2 hours.
7. Špansko swimming pool
The newest city pool and a genuinely sensible answer to rain: it is warm inside and you stop caring what the weather does. Alongside the pools there is a wellness area, a gym and a slide.
Where: Ulica Drage Stipca 4. Opening hours: weekdays 6:30 to 21:30, weekends 8:00 to 20:00. Price: day ticket 4 EUR.
Monday is the catch
If your rainy day lands on a Monday, the list gets shorter. The Technical Museum is closed, and so are most museums in Zagreb. What stays open: the cinema, the Grič Tunnel, the pool and the Museum of Hangovers. If the rain carries on into the evening, see our ideas for things to do in Zagreb at night.
Frequently asked questions
What is there to do in Zagreb when it rains?
Seven options that work: the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla, a cinema, the Museum of Hangovers, the Grič Tunnel, the covered part of Dolac market, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Špansko swimming pool. If it is a Monday, check opening hours first, because most museums are closed.
Which museums in Zagreb are open in the evening?
Most Zagreb museums close between 17:00 and 20:00 and do not open at all on Mondays. The Museum of Hangovers at Vlaška 55 is open every day from 10:00 to 22:00, including Mondays and public holidays (closed only on 1 January, 25 December and Easter Sunday), which makes it the latest museum visit available in the city centre.
What is there to do in Zagreb on a rainy day with kids?
The Technical Museum Nikola Tesla is the first choice: the planetarium, the mine and the demonstrations hold attention. The Špansko pool has a slide and a pool for the youngest. Cinemas screen films in the morning too, so you don’t have to wait until evening.
What is there to do in Zagreb on a rainy day with work colleagues?
For a small group anything on this list works. For an organised outing of 8 to 50 people, the Museum of Hangovers runs group visits and team building in central Zagreb, where you get a hosted programme instead of just walking around.
